How about sharing some good ideas for days out? I'll start with Formby...
DESTINATION: Formby Point (National Trust)
WILDLIFE:Red Squirrels
FACILITIES:Toilets.Peanuts and seeds on sale at the car park kiosk!
WHERE IT IS: Victoria Road, Freshfield, Formby, Liverpool L37 1LJ Telephone: 01704 878591 OPEN:Every day except Christmas day, dawn to dusk
CHARGES:There is a charge for car parking I think it was £6 last time we went.
GENERAL INFORMATION:To the left of the main path just after you come past the car park kiosk is the squirrel walk. You are pretty sure to see red squirrels here, and they are very tame, so it is well worth a walk round its not far and it is really easy walking. If you go at (or just after) school holidays, the squirrels are inclined to be so well fed that they arent very interested in the food, but at other times they will come really close to take food from you.We normally take hazel nuts, and they will often come and take these from your hands.
Sitting quietly on the other side of the main path, away from most of the people, will often reward you with good views in more open settings. There are also plenty of small woodland birds who will come for sunflower hearts (and probably other seeds too, but thats what we took J)
You can also walk (or drive) down to the sea shore most times that we have been the beach has been crowded so we havent seen any waders or sea birds its probably better early morning, but as Ive never been there early enough I dont actually know that!
PHOTOS: The squirrel walk is in a wooded area, so is quite dark and not very good for photos, and at busy times there are large quantities of peanut shells and bird seed lying around, so the settings can be pretty horrible. And yes, this picture was taken there!
